    Our theme is inspired by the Cornish folk-tale. During a school trip to St. Senara’s Church one student sees the mermaid. He is lured into a journey where good and evil mermaids try to entice him into their world, meeting pirates and “poor unfortunate souls” along the way. Can he escape evil Ursula and be returned back to his trip?

"Dear America"

    Dear America, in 2015 your country suffered 52,579 gun crime incidents, 13,338 people died. Citizens believe they're protecting themselves, but when an innocent school child and homeless person are brutally shot down is protection even a reality? In a place where a revolver firing can be mistaken for fireworks, lives are lost daily. Every gun has history, let's not repeat it.

    In a 19th century asylum, a doctor hears of murderous love affairs from Robert Browning. A Duke’s portraits of deceased Duchesses, kept as souvenirs. Porphyria, too weak for loves endeavour. Her beautiful hair is her undoing. And an apothecary creating poison for vicious women’s revenge. Will the doctor’s conscience develop into sympathetic understanding? Is he really the patient?

    This Christmas, West Africa was deemed to have won the war on Ebola; whole families were unable to comfort each other as they died. In our piece, we explore love through touch using Edward Scissorhands as the metaphor for the infection and the isolation it causes; taking this imaginative leap we aim to draw new parallels with this global crisis.

    During the darkest days of WW2, the British War Office recruited top solvers of cryptic crossword puzzles, as these individuals had strong lateral thinking skills. They became the code-breakers of Bletchley Park battling in a race against time: Man versus machine, to crack the German Enigma codes. Their code-breaking skills created a legacy for future technologies.

Standards of care are extremely poor and many children are abused and neglected. Upon leaving the orphanage they find it difficult to function in society. See what it means to be an orphan like me.

    Dreaming of becoming a journalist, Dorothy Lawrence disguised herself as a male soldier and landed in the trenches of World War One. Exposed to the violence and devastation of war, the only release for her and her comrades was letters home. All too soon her identity was revealed, story silenced and mind left tortured by memories.

    Osiris, Egypt’s king – loved by his people; hated by his brother Set. Set lures Osiris – to his death; cuts him into pieces, scattering the fragments. Isis, Osiris’ wife, gathers the dismembered body; love and magic revive Osiris. Love is born again: Isis gives birth to Horus, hawk-god, and true heir. What was broken is healed; love triumphs.

"Let them eat cake"

    Our piece demonstrates the conflict between the classes during the French revolution era. On one side, we see the world of the French aristocrats, opulent and decadent, led by King Louis and the infamous Marie Antoinette. On the reverse, the depression of the poverty stricken townsfolk, battling against starvation, and their bid to overthrow the monarchy and restore the balance.

    In 1850 women were committed to lunatic asylums for the crime of ‘reading too much’. Amongst other reasons were hysteria, postnatal depression, infidelity... We explore whether these women were truly mad and whether the ‘cures’ they were subjected to did more harm than good. Welcome to a world where the once sane will inevitably succumb to the madness of Bedlam.

    Our dark Fairy-tale opens with a young girl who is left alone. She wanders into her attic and is lured into an enchanted book, where characters from her favourite books lead her through their beautiful and magical world, where temptation lurks at every turn. Will she resist and manage to escape or will the darkness consume and trap her forever?

"A Swashbuckling Adventure"

    Our adventure begins with a gang of pirates in a tavern, doing what pirates do best...drinking rum! A rival gang burst in with a treasure map. A fight ensues and the map is torn in two, one half for each gang. Over high seas and strange lands the race is on. Who will find the treasure?

Our piece follows five teenagers so engrossed with computer games, social media and texting that it's having an adverse effect on their sleeping, school work and mental health.

"If you go down to the woods"

    What could be more peaceful than a stroll in the woods; where the atmosphere is calm and inhabitants welcoming… but beware. Familiar faces are sure for a big surprise as dishonesty, deceit and danger reveal themselves and the secrets that are hidden within. Can the innocent triumph over evil or will the woods claim their victims?

"The Faraway Tree"

    Our dance draws inspiration from Enid Blyton’s magical stories of The Faraway Tree. The topmost branches of the Faraway Tree reach high into the clouds. As the children climb upwards they are transported into different lands of fantasy and imagination. Each has its own adventure, and through these the children make their own choices about what's really important in life.

    Arachne, a Greek village girl, was full of pride, the third evil to emerge from Pandora’s box. She boasted that she could weave better tapestries than the goddess Athena herself. A furious Athena threw down a challenge, which proud Arachne foolishly accepted. Big mistake. It is unwise to anger the gods as their vengeance is without mercy.

    A troll and wizard make a mirror reflecting only people’s bad traits. The mirror smashes, and the evil snow Queen takes a shard of glass stabbing the young boy, Kay. His friends, Gerda and Raven, search for Kay and a potion to remove the evil. The potion bottle breaks! But- their love and honesty is enough to defeat the evil!

    We all have talents; sometimes they are difficult to discover. Our hero dreams of joining a travelling circus as a clown, but which role? Similar to Romeo and Juliet, Hinemoa and Tutanekai fall in love despite their tribes being rivals, causing dramatic consequences for everyone involved.

    We have explored Philip Larkin's life and used his day job as a big inspiration to our piece which is set in the Hull University Library.
