Well, folks, that's the 2010 UK Rock Challenge Tour officially at an end - everyone ready with their plans for 2011?
Just back from an amazing 2 days in Carlisle. I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect from a junior show but I was not disappointed - quite a few of the performances would not have looked out of place at a senior show!
I had a great time judging on Thursday and volunteering backstage on Friday (and a big shout-out to the Netherhall guys who were backstage - thoroughly enjoyed our dance breaks!)

But wait - there's MORE !! The "Times and Star" has also covered Netherhall School's UK Rock Challenge National Award! Go here to read that article and see even more photos :)

Hey!
I'm interested in getting my school involved in the Carlisle Junior Event 2011 ... when would the entry forms need to be completed by?
Thanks - Stace :)
------------
Entries for the 2010 Tour opened at 7am on Sept 9th 2009, Stace, when the "We Intend To Enter" forms were placed - with a few seconds of 7am - on several websites, the locations of which were announced in advance.
Places in the 2010 Tour were allocated strictly in the order in which completed "We Intend To Enter" forms were received back at UKRC HQ: most places were filled by the end of that day.
I've not yet received notice of the entry date for 2011 but let's assume early September 2010 and 7am~ish (though I confess I still prefer the idea of midnight :)
Hope that helps ?!

My final rock challenge! (At this school anyway)
I can't believe it's all over already! It's been so much fun and it's been such an amazing experience! Not just this year either: all three years I have been taking part in the competition.
I have enjoyed doing it for the last three years so much and am gutted that it is over... I have made so many new friends and being involved in this type of thing has even helped me decide what career path I wish to follow once I leave school.
Well, what can I say! "Thank-you!" to all the people - the production team and volunteers (and of course you, john!!) - who have helped to make this such an amazing and memorable experience, and I hope many more people can continue to enjoy rock challenge over the years as much as I have!!
Hopefully I can continue this once I go on to college: meanwhile I am just praying that my school change their minds and allow year 11s to take part in rock challenge next year...

To all who take part in Rock Challenge: wow, this year has been amazing, especially for Bridgemary, who won the Southern Grand Final on Thursday night - congrats!! Thank you so much for an enjoyable, if tiring, night's entertainment. A special thank-you from the Governors to Miss White and the rest of the crew for everything they have done for the team.
Congrats also to Ravenswood: I know that a few bonds have been formed this year between performers from both Schools.

It's not a worldwide first, Ravens Wood. Randwick did it from 2001-2003 and St Columba's have also had 3 winning entries in a row. There might be others, but those are two to my knowledge =)

Another great night at Rock Challenge! The young people I met on stage at both Tuesday's and Wednesday's Junior Rock Challenge shows were a credit to their parents and schools, each and every one of them cheering when other schools were presented with their awards.
My only disappointment is that some 'grown-ups' still don't seem to understand the reason behind Rock Challenge. They appear to see it as a straight-forward competition, to be won in all circumstances! Can I ask those people to read what the aims of Rock Challenge are, read some of the messages posted on this web-site, and understand that the idea is most definitely 'not the winning but the taking part' and hopefully realise that teaching their young people that having fun on a drug and alcohol-free high IS far more important than where they come in the results!

ROCK CHALLENGE JAPAN 2010 = GO !
Rock Challenge will stage its 4th event in Japan this year: it's on 23rd November, rehearsals run 9am till 5pm and the evening show at the Yokohama Kannai Hall will probably start at 6pm.
The Delhi Private School (winners of the 2010 Dubai Rock Challenge) plan to visit and perform, and we are also pleased to connect with the Camp Zama US Army Base too. Additionally, the British Council, British Embassy and British Chamber of Commerce organisations in Japan are all most supportive in the growth of the Rock Challenge - Japan project.
Best wishes - Michael Di Stasio (on behalf of the Japan Rock Challenge Team - Suzi Yamaguchi, Nahoko Swan and Will Thompson)
PS to The Wavell School, UK:- you will be missed in 2010 after 3 years of performances for us, but we are looking forward to your return in 2011 !!!

We are nearly there, Kings Langley, and you are working so hard. It is really tough to keep the momentum going from Feb until June, but somehow you are managing.
I would like to take this moment to say a fond farewell to Karen (dance captain) for whom this is her last year in Rocka before she goes off to drama school in Sept. Karen, it has been wonderful to work with you over the last few years and I know you will be amazing in all you do :)

Hello, John!
It's good to see the messages from team members thanking Rock Challenge for their "Finals" experience. The effort that goes into making these days as good as possible is massive, not only from the paid staff but also from our fantastic volunteers. For instance, we had 3 trained Assistant Stage Managers (Ant, Jonny and Stoddy) working for nothing but the love of the event and we couldn't do it without them. In short, without people willing to lift, lug and sweep with no reward except me shouting for them to work harder and faster, we wouldn't have the pinnacle of our work which is the finals.
I'm not too good at using the message boards but if you want to post any of this, I think it would be great if people knew the selfless effort which goes into making these events all they can be.
Oliver Ashman (ASM, UK Rock Challenge)

And so, since Ollie said "but if you want to post any of this", I did, and there it is :)

HUGE congratulations to every single team that took part in the Northern Premier Finals. The standard was so high, and I wouldn't have fancied the judges job of placing everyone: it must've been very very close!
Also a shout-out to Southfield Technology College from Cumbria: although you didn't place, your theme was fantastic and definitely raised awareness. Well done, guys!

BBEC, you looked totally stunning when those curtains opened and i am so very proud of you!!! Our 3rd year as a premier team, and placing every time is a massive achievement!! We are so pleased to be amongst the best of the North of England! :-)
Congratulations to Thornton for coming 1st! Another Bradford heat school taking the crown!! I have to say with 4 Bradford heat schools placing at Finals this year and two (Cathedral and Thornton) taking the crowns, BRADFORD is the BEST! :-)

Well done to everybody who took part in the Northern Open and Prem finals but especially well done to Peterhead and Stuart (my apprentice who I think was trying to outshine the ultra-colourful Ashfield girlies in his gold shorts and cloak :) and as 'Head Choreographer' in more ways than 1 for Peterhead, he was especially pleased with the hair award. (I think every member of the Peterhead team had different coloured hairspray on their hair.)
Congratulations also on travelling the furthest distance and still managing to have volunteers in the auditorium at 8 o'clock in the morning and the whole team there shortly after: you all deserved Spirit!

A massive well done to all the dancers in the team: i'm so proud of what you all achieved. Best Rock Challenge Hornsea have done in a long time!

PETERHEED - I AM SOOOOO PROUD OF UZE ALL!! Uze were amazin... uze couldn't have done that any better if u tried ... it looked fantastic :)
Thank you so much to everyone involved in peterhead's performance: no matter how big or small a part u played, it all counts in gettin that performance onto the stage!! We couldn't do it without the help of everyone involved!! We have a great community-supported team :)
I'm not only proud of uze for the performance but also the way uze conducted yourselves throughout the day.... being friendly to everyone, cheering on the other schools, gettin into the right rock challenge spirit, and i think the spirit of rock challenge award was well deserved!!
Thank-you to all the other schools as well for makin the northern premier final the best one in a long time... to be competing at that level is a privilege - we feel like winners just being there with such great teams!! We are just a little school from a little town in the far north-east corner of scotland who travel all the way down to grimsby to have fun, enjoy the day, make new friends and rock that stage (and we sure did that!!)
I couldn't be happier just now... 5 awards and also avoiding relegation to stay in the premier final for another year as scotland's only representatives :)
Must mention my 2 favourite teams apart from my own... thornton and hornsea!! Uze are both amazin teams and it's always a pleasure to watch u perform and share our rock challenge experience with u guys!! Well done on 1st and 3rd!!! Always good to get a chat with karen and danika too :)
And danika... YOU DID IT!! Told u that u cud.. and u deserve it!! Enjoy that star trophy that i dream of one day holding for real :)
Must also mention ashfield girls. You are the most colourful school ever... Ur performances are dazzling and have a good message behind them... Well done on your 2nd place ! :)
Buttershaw.. your performance was outstanding... spot on and so sharp!! People need to realise how good it is to get 4th in the premier final especially when it is of that high a standard!! It is an amazin achievement - i would go absolutely crazy to even just get 5th!! It's not always about the winning (and our team were ecstatic with 5 awards and staying up in the prems!! :)
One last thing... BEST HAIR!!!! HELL YEAH!!!!! Did any1 see my reaction to that award? Hahah :)
Stuart (Peterheed... head choreographer and award-winning hairdresser!)

What can I say - you are all truly amazing !
Cast and crew - you believed, and when you believe - it happens. You think you had fun yesterday? You wait until you feel the buzz of Premier next year - it's awesome!!
Caroline, we all know that this could never ever happen if it wasn't for all you do every time.
Julie - again - the costumes were brilliant, and Kim - I really thought you were going to have that little Rocka star there and then!
Matt, Hayley, Chris and Steve - couldn't do the crew without you (and that stranger with the paintbrush - he can draw a bit too! :)
Hayley (or should I say BuCHan, as the Ozzie rockers like to call you ?) - you ARE a genius no matter what you say!
Fingers crossed for Wolfreton. Hope your second place scores last night are enough to get you through too. See you there!
Good luck to everyone tonight in the other Open Finals and tomorrow in the Premier. Have fun!

Congratulations to everybody at Firpark for another fabulous performance at North Lanarkshire Summer Arts Festival! You all coped so well on such a tiny stage.
We had an e-mail to school from an audience member which said:
"I just had to e-mail the school to say how fabulous the Summer Arts Festival was last night. Your children were a credit to the school. I have never seen children so energetic and completely engaged in performing. You could give the stage shows in London a run for their money.
As a teacher I am aware of the tremendous amount of work which went on before the show took to the stage. A massive congratulations to all pupils, staff and parents. I was crying at the end: it was so moving.
I will certainly be checking out Rock Challenge as it looks like something that my school could get involved with."
Vanessa Geib (Liaison Teacher, Firpark School, Motherwell, Scotland)

Hi John!
I wonder if you can help. We were delighted to find out that St Benedict's got through to the Open Final but to be honest we didn't think we would be able to go due to funding. However the school has donated to our fund so now we're hell bent on being there!
We're hoping to stay over the night before as grimsby is so far away and we don't want to subject the kids to a 26-hour day unless we really have to. However, we can't get in touch with the uni halls we stopped in last time and the time before that was just the most awful place ever! We're trying everywhere and looking into all kinds of options but i was also wondering if you had any ideas: maybe know where other schools have stayed in the past ... anywhere in the yorkshire humberside region ?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated !
Cheers - Natasha B (St. Benedict's Catholic High School, Whitehaven, Cumbria)
------------
Hi John!
I don't know if this will help but we are staying in the Travelodge at Hull South Cave. £45 per room with 3 kids to a room.
Lesley (Montrose Academy, Scotland)
------------
We stay at St James Hotel! £25 for a twin room. Does the job for the one night!
Very friendly staff, good food... Staff also very accommodating with providing plentiful buffet dinner at suitable times!
Miss Willis (Belfast Model School for Girls, Northern Ireland)
++++++++++++
Hi John
Peterhead are staying in the Holiday Inn Express - Hull City Centre. When we booked it we got it for £49.50 per room with 3 kids to a family room. It's a bigger hotel than the Premier Inn/Travelodges so was able to give us 40 rooms without filling it up completely :)
We used to stay in the St James Hotel in Grimsby: not sure how that cost though.
Benjamin (Peterhead Academy, Scotland)
------------
The other thing about the Holiday Inn in Hull is that they provide a continental breakfast free of charge. We found this much more convenient than the years of dragging pancakes and softies with us: means you don't have to feed them 3 times. There's also LOADS of room and it's really safe cause you have to use your key to get in the front door. Peace of mind when you've got 100 school kids in one place.
Hope this helps!
Lorna (Peterhead Academy, Scotland) x
------------
Think there is also now a Premier Inn at Scunthorpe which is not too far away or also try Lincoln Uni (a bit further to travel but they may have the number of rooms you require). I think also there is a Premier Inn type thing at Pontefract.
Good Luck - Grimsby is not great for the accommodation of large numbers!
Vanessa (Firpark School, Motherwell, Scotland)

Hello again, Jordann :)
I know you've asked this before but - VERY sadly - my answer still has to be the one you've heard before ie I STILL don't know when they'll be finished checking through them all out there in wintry Australia :(
I note that you're NOT signed up to receive the occasional newsy email from me here at the website. Rest assured: if you WERE signed up then you would get an email from me just as soon as I hear the global videos are back online!
Don't know how to sign up? Just send a blank email to ukrc-subscribe@topica.com (and follow the Topica instructions if they email you back :)

Well done to the Smalls for finishing the London Marathon! Judging by the state of pain that Ian (Firpark PE teacher, Rocka enthusiast and Scottish Cross Country Vets Champion) was in when he came back from London I can only imagine what it was like to volunteer for Rocka at Portsmouth after that.
Ian ran it in 3hrs 15mins as his time was crucial to the sponsorship of Firpark's new Minibus (and we've now nearly got enough money :)
Don't know where these people get all their energy from!

Just to add on to geibo's message... she should be very proud of her team at firpark: they all rallied round well to make sure the kids got to rock challenge to enjoy the best day of the year (as many of them described it to me and kimberley as we did their hair and make-up!!) You have a lovely team there and they are amazin: not only the performance they put on but their behaviour and attitude as well!! A joy to work with them and a well deserved 3rd place :)
As to the comment about new liaison teacher: if u ever want a break, geibo, get susan to step up into ur place! She was an absolute star and worked so hard.. she took on the role of temporary LT brilliantly and made sure everything ran smoothly!!
I had such a good week last week at the grimsby and carlisle rock challenges!! Was such a fun week: some amazin performances and great teams!!
I must mention hornsea!!! U never fail to impress me!! Every year better and better and this yr u just raised the bar again!! Everything about it was faultless !!
Now to my team.. PETERHEED!! 3 rehearsals left.. work hard and put everything into it to make this performance the best we have ever done!! Uze are all amazin: it's just that final push now!! I'm so proud of uze all for the months of hard work uze have put in!! Can't wait to get to the finals now!! Wotever happens on the day, just perform to the best of ure ability and i will have a smile on my face :)

Back from underneath my ash cloud and starting to learn what went on last week to get the Firpark team to the Sands at Carlisle. On Monday there was a massive water-main burst so school was closed on the day they were supposed to be having a full cast rehearsal. Nine Firpark staff did not make it back after the holidays (HUGE number for a small school) so the staff that did make it had their own 'operation cobra' to get everybody on board that was able to go to Rock Challenge and had the necessary checks to meet our authority's regulations.
They could not find the original CD copies of the music so they 'raided' Foundry Music Lab and interupted important recording sessions: the guys at Foundry are stars and sorted them out.
They then processed the mountain of paperwork that seems to go hand-in-hand with any trip out of school nowadays.
Well done, everybody! (Plenty of new Liaison Teachers for next year! :)
Vanessa Geib (Liaison Teacher, Firpark School, Motherwell, Scotland)

A really big well done to all the staff and pupils at Firpark School and Stuart and Kimberley from Peterhead. You should all be really proud of yourselves after what Stuart described as a fantastic performance.
It was a first for me - Liaison Teacher by remote. I had my most nervous performance day ever. I went on holiday to get rid of some stress but the last 9 days have been more stressful than ever and all because of a volcano.
See you all soon - Vanessa Geib (Firpark School, Motherwell, Scotland)
